Competing Interests

A competing interest (also known as a conflict of interest) arises when an individual’s personal, financial, professional, or academic relationships could affect their objectivity, decision-making, or ability to conduct unbiased research or reviews. These interests may be financial or non-financial and could influence authors, reviewers, and editors in various ways.

Competing Interests

  1. Financial Conflicts – Receiving funding, grants, employment, consultancy fees, stocks, or ownership in organizations that may benefit from or be affected by the research.
  2. Academic & Professional Conflicts – Having direct collaborations, institutional affiliations, or rivalries that could influence judgment.
  3. Personal Conflicts – Close personal relationships with authors, funders, or organizations related to the research.
  4. Intellectual Conflicts – Strong pre-existing beliefs or advocacy related to the manuscript’s topic that could bias the evaluation or reporting of results.

Author Responsibilities

  • Authors must declare any potential competing interests at the time of manuscript submission. This includes:
  • Any funding sources that supported the research.
  • Any financial or personal affiliations that may have influenced the study.
  • Any involvement of sponsoring organizations in study design, data collection, analysis, or manuscript writing.
  • If no competing interests exist, authors should state: “The authors declare that there are no competing interests related to this study.”

Reviewer Responsibilities

Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest before accepting a review assignment. If a reviewer feels their judgment could be biased due to a competing interest, they should decline the review and notify the editorial office.

Editorial Responsibilities

Editors must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts where they have a competing interest. In such cases, the manuscript will be assigned to another editor with no conflicts.

Failure to disclose competing interests may lead to:

  • Rejection or retraction of the article.
  • Removal from the reviewer/editorial board for repeated violations.
  • Public notification of ethical concerns regarding the published work.
